The
Community House
Improvement Committee (CHIC)
celebrated its first birthday in September.
This
committee of the Topanga Community Club (TCC) has been extremely productive
in 12 short months. Chaired by Pat MacNeil, it is composed of highly
motivated members of several interests groups from TCEP, the Chamber
of Commerce, the Community House Advisory Council, Topanga Youth Service,
Seniors, Friends of the proposed Topanga library, the Topanga Mountain
School, Ecoartspace, Topanga Online, Ball-field players, a Mother's
Group, to a local architect, and a Representative of the Third District
Office.
The survey posted by direct mail to the community in October 2000, enabled
CHIC to access the needs and desires of our community. CHIC's mission
" To enhance the Community House's grounds by developing facilities
and programs that offer local citizens educational, recreational, safety
and
environmental opportunities" has inspired the four sub-committees
created to make those dreams become reality.
Firstly, the Planning Committee, led by Fred Fear, reviewed and compared
several similar sites In the surrounding area and solicited a wish list
from various groups interested in being included in the new development.
Meanwhile the Legal Committee, led by Nancy Crater began reviewing the
club's by-laws and advising legal matters, most recently, the Building
Committee, led by Jack MacNeil, completed a feasibility study funded
by
Zev Yarolslavsky's office to gain a better understanding and documentation
of the 12 acres buildable parcels, boundaries and geological characteristics.
Eventually leading to expansion of the property, which will require
additional funding. Thus, the finance Committee, led by Cynthia Scott,
has been researching private foundations, government grants and individuals
for capitol improvements. A strong show of community support will be
essential when approaching donors, and matching contributions. Keep
an eye out for upcoming sponsored fund-raisers to be scheduled in the
new year in order to underwrite the new construction.
Monthly CHIC meetings are scheduled on the third Saturday of every month,
starting at 9:00 am in The Penny Room at the Community House.
We welcome new members. For more information about meeting dates
and committee activities, please contact the TCC at 455-1980.
